Former U.S. Rep. Mel Reynolds is hiding in South Africa and has told the Associated Press that his life is in danger.

According to AP, the disgraced congressman, who resigned in 1994 after being convicted of statutory rape, believes that he is being followed by a Zimbabwean death squad that is after the information he has on American businessmen who do illegal business with the African country.

Reynolds was arrested mid-February on pornography and immigration charges. He accused the government of making up the pornography charges to discredit him, AP said.
