It was a rough weekend for Matt Barnes and his family after he revealed that his teenage son, Zay, was hit by a car last week. Barnes gave an update on his son’s condition on Instagram, writing in a post, “My guys had a tough week. Hit by a car while jogging Wednesday had a bad stomach ache Friday tried to play through the Mamba Invitational, couldn’t sleep all Friday night decided to FINALLY tell his mom & I yesterday when he couldn’t move..”

He added: “I took him to the emergency room & he had to have emergency appendix surgery. Doctor said it was the largest appendix he had ever seen that hadn’t ruptured. Thank you @uclahealth for taking care of my baby boy. Appreciate the love & support from family & friends!! We’re headed home.”

Barnes has always publicly been open about his relationship with his twin sons and his ex-wife, Gloria Govan, who is currently married to Barnes’ ex-teammate and five-time NBA champion Derek Fisher.

Govan’s relationship with Fisher was once quite controversial: In October 2015, while Barnes was playing for the Memphis Grizzlies, it was reported by the New York Post that while he was at training camp in California, he drove nearly 100 miles to fight Fisher after learning that he was dating Govan and staying at a house he bought without his knowledge.
