The Queen of Soul, true to form, is posthumously ruling the charts this week.
Billboard reports that following Franklin’s death last week, her 30 Greatest Hits album hit the top 10 on the Billboard 200, which tracks album sales. Not only are sales for the album up an astounding 12,693 percent, this also marks the first time in 46 years that an Aretha album has broken the top 10.
Franklin’s last album to do so was her 1972 collection of gospel songs, Amazing Grace. Her highest Billboard outing ever was No. 2, which she hit with I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You (1967) and Aretha: Lady Soul (1968), Billboard reports.
But what’s most remarkable is that her 30 Greatest Hits album surged to No. 7 in what was essentially a single day. As Billboard notes, the final day of the chart’s tracking window for this week was Thursday, Aug. 16—the same day Aretha died. So all that music Aretha’s fans and mourners (read: everybody) blasted through the weekend? That will show up on next week’s chart, making it likely that the Queen will stay on top at least another week.
NPR also reports that Franklin’s compilation album was Apple’s top album on iTunes a day after her death. Eight of her songs also landed on Spotify’s “Viral 50" playlist this weekend.
Long live the Queen.
