AFP is reporting that Academy Award-winning actor Forest Whitaker will be named goodwill ambassador for peace and reconciliation, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization said on Thursday. The nomination was "in recognition of Mr. Whitaker's humanitarian and artistic commitment. His commitment to social change and art is evident in his projects, like Better Angels, a film about Ugandan child soldiers," UNESCO said. At UNESCO, he will be tasked with helping to educate the general public and mobilize political decision makers in favor of youth programs centered on peace education, human rights and global citizenship.
Forest Whitaker quietly goes about the business of making the world a better place. The U.N. is thanking him for it while enlisting his help in promoting peace through education and the arts. Whitaker's work demonstrates that celebrities can use their fame, hearts and minds to make a difference in the world.
