Naomi Osaka and Cordae became the talk of the timelines on Monday thanks to shocking news the tennis champ shared on Instagram.

In a post to her stories, Osaka revealed that her and her rapper boyfriend Cordae — with whom she shares a nearly two-year-old daughter named Shai — have decided to call it quits after five years. The couple had been together since 2019.

“Hi everyone, just wanted to say that Cordae and I are no longer in a relationship. No bad blood at all, he’s a great person and an awesome dad,” Osaka began. “Honestly really glad our paths crossed because our daughter is my biggest blessing and I was able to grow a lot from our experiences together.”

This unfortunate news comes just one day after it was announced on Sunday that the tennis star would be retiring from the championship match at the WTA Auckland Open which was set to take place on Monday, citing an abdominal injury. The injury comes just one week before she’s set to play in the Australian Open. Once their split started circulating on social media, many fans took to X/Twitter to defend her, send well wishes and warn others from spewing any further negativity towards her.

“I don’t wanna see a single person on my timeline bully Naomi Osaka,” said one user.

“Naomi Osaka and Cordae have broken up (see Naomi’s IG). Sad for her to be honest, but it’s probably what they felt was right and she said there is no bad blood, which is good. Hopefully she can stay positive for AO and that lower back injury/abdominal injury will heal up,” wrote another.

“I don’t want to see any thinkpieces about Naomi Osaka’s personal life. I’m just gonna say I’m rooting for you, girl!” another said.

While we won’t make this article a think piece, we’d be remiss not to remind you that the writing may have been on the wall for this couple in fall 2024. As we previously reported, thanks to a pair of cryptic tweets sent out by the four-time Grand Slam champion and pretty interesting Instagram wipe, many thought Osaka and Cordae had called it quits back in October. But, it seems the two decided to hold off on making things official until the top of the new year.

New year, new Naomi, indeed.
