We can all shut the hell up about how hard our Monday has been now. As much as you want to slap a #RiseAndGrind, #NoDaysOff, #StayReady caption on that Instagram of your pre-9 a.m. cup of coffee (good job on getting to work before Donald Trump did, by the way), you’re not touching the work Nayzia Thomas put in last week.
The pregnant Johnson County (Kan.) Community College student went viral after her mom snapped a photo of her propped up in her hospital bed, completing a final assignment while she was in labor.
“[This pic] is the perfect explanation of my life,” Thomas, who lives in Kansas City, wrote. “Yes I’m about to have a baby, but final SZN ain’t over yet.”
According to Yahoo!, Thomas stayed in school until she was 39 weeks pregnant with the goal of wrapping up her final exams before her son came into the world. But babies have a way of not following the plan, and the college sophomore went into labor earlier than expected. Still, Thomas, a psychology major, was undeterred and wrapped up her final on dissociative identity disorder from her bed less than two hours before giving birth to her son, Anthony Johnson.
“[The assignment] wasn’t due until the end of the week—finals week is Dec. 11 to tomorrow—but my goal was to try to have everything done before,” Thomas told Yahoo! Lifestyle. “[I thought,] ‘Before all this gets crazy, let me hurry up and finish this final.’”
Unfortunately for Thomas, things did end up getting crazy. While she gave birth to a healthy son, she had some complications during the delivery. According to an update she gave from her Twitter account Thursday, Thomas experienced major blood loss and her body went into shock after she gave birth.
“It was very scary,” Thomas wrote, “but his father was right there to take over when I went unconscious.”
(A shallow sidenote: Can we acknowledge that somehow, some damn way, Thomas’ hair managed to stay flawless through labor and childbirth? Snatching edges and giving birth at the same time—the audacity! I know that little boy better not step out of line a day in his life.)
Thomas ended up needing a blood transfusion before finally being released from the hospital on Friday. She’ll be wrapping up the semester with a 3.5 GPA and tells Yahoo! Lifestyle that she’ll be taking a month off before hitting the books again.
