FDA Blood Donor Form Rejects Gays

Folks are up in arms over the Food and Drug Administration's approved form that bans gays from donating blood. The form asks if you have had sexual contact with a male. If you answer "yes" and you are a man, you are automatically banned from donating blood because of high-risk behavior. William Saletan of Slate.com rightly highlights the ridiculousness of this policy, particularly when other groups — blacks in this case — are considered to be high risk. We get his point but don't understand the need to suggest that if one group is banned, then another group should also be banned. Such divisive tactics won't help anyone, including the gay community. Thanks for dragging blacks — who are also part of the gay community, by the way — into this foolishness. How about stating that discriminating against any group in testing is unacceptable? Just a thought.
