The New York Times is reporting that Mark Zuckerberg, chief executive and a founder of Facebook, has agreed to donate $100 million to improve the long-troubled public schools in Newark, N.J. Governor Chris Christie will cede some control of the state-run system to Mayor Cory A. Booker in conjunction with the huge gift. The three will announce the gift on The Oprah Winfrey Show on Friday. Under the terms, Booker will play a major role in choosing the school system's superintendent and regain control of the Newark public school system. The state will be able to take over the school system again, which happened in 1995, if it is mismanaged. Hats off to Zuckerberg, who is using his wealth to help those who need it most. What would public school systems look like if other millionaires and billionaires did the same?
