“When the world tells us that the very existence of us, or our skin color, could get us kicked out of Starbucks. When the world tells us that because of your skin color, the police can mistake your cellphone for a gun and you’re murdered, it’s important that I tell my story and I tell stories about us in the future and redefine what it means to be African American in the future and where we can go,” Janelle Monáe said of her adoration for Afrofuturism in a video for Pandora, the streaming service.
Monáe teamed up with Pandora on its “Literally, Literally” series, and she opened up about her latest album, Dirty Computer. In the video, Monáe uses virtual reality (the VRCapture) to create art. What she comes up with is nothing less than a masterpiece, with a woman at the center, as it should be.
