The date was March 26, 1944 when a true diva strutted into the world. Seventy-five years later and Ms. Diana Ross is not only a diva—she’s now a diamond diva.
Celebrating her diamond anniversary, Ms. Ross and Fathom Events are presenting a special two-night screening of Diana Ross: Her Life, Love and Legacy featuring Diana Ross Live in Central Park in movie theaters worldwide. The film will feature never-before-seen footage from her family, including her children Ross Naess, Evan Ross, Rhonda Ross Kendrick, Chudney Ross, and Tracee Ellis Ross, the latter of whom will present a loving introduction to the film to celebrate her mother’s legacy.
Additionally, the special event will showcase a remastered version of the diva’s iconic Central Park concert in July 1983, which featured a record-breaking audience of over 450,000 people and Ross’ unforgettable persistence as she performed during a thunderstorm. And like a true diva, Ms. Ross returned for an impromptu second performance the following evening.
“I feel honored that Ms. Ross chose our concert in Central Park to celebrate her Diamond Diana Birthday on the big screen worldwide,” the concert’s award-winning producer and director Steve Binder told The Root. “It was an experience of a lifetime that I will never forget. Her performance throughout those two days in March of 1983, as one news reporter in New York broadcast, ‘Diana Ross proved beyond a doubt why she wears the title of SUPERSTAR.’ For me personally, icing on the cake was being honored as the best DIRECTOR of the YEAR by the Cable Ace Awards.”
In the above exclusive clip from the documentary obtained by The Root, Ms. Ross speaks on her “magical” children, as well as the unique magic of performing onstage versus a studio. “Black Girl Magic,” indeed.
“I envisioned a dream and that’s what I created over those two days in Central Park. I picked a goal, and then imagined all the details,” said Ms. Ross, via press release. “I believe imagination is magical, that we can think of something and bring it into being.”
