Even in the dead of summer, The Root is thinking about this upcoming school year when Black students will walk onto the nation’s top Historically Black Universities and Colleges (HBCUs) — and some for the very first time. Although we love our HBCUs for their academic excellence and famous alumni, college is more than simply hitting the books. Balancing studying with a good party— on the weekends of course— is what college is all about.

We know school admins don’t like to be labeled “party schools,” but that’s part of the appeal, right?! Students need a release, and trust they know how to find it. In this list, The Root took a look at some of the most well known HBCUs in the nation, but this time, we’re talking all things party life!

With notable alumni like Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and Pulitzer prize winner Toni Morrison, Howard is regarded as a source for Black excellence and achievement. At the same time, “the Mecca” is more than strictly business.

Situated in the middle of “Chocolate City,” Howard University is close to the heart of one of Washington, D.C.’s party districts. You can catch Howard students at “Thirsty Thursdays” on U Street or at the “darties” (day-parties) on the Yard in between classes. Homecoming brings out the celebrities and Howard alumni from around the world. Whenever you step on Howard’s campus, expect there to always be something going on. Students say that’s just how life at H-U goes... You know!

You might not expect this university, dropped in the middle of Tuskegee, Alabama to have quite the popping party scene, but students and alumni can tell you that being located in a rural area will force you to get creative.

Tuskegee’s homecoming is one of the most highly-anticipated events of the school year. With a lengthy lineup of events and parties, students say you’ll always find something to get into when you’re not studying to become the next Black doctor.

Alabama State University

Despite the university only having a little over 3,000 students on its campus, Alabama State is known for its parties and its homecoming, which brings in thousands annually.

With alumni including radio host Rickey Smiley and rapper 2 Chainz, it’s clear that the HBCU is anything but quiet. Known for their amazing marching band, the school is also located in Montgomery, Alabama, a city with a rich civil rights history and a chill but memorable party scene.

With Florida State University literally three miles away, it’s not shocking Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University would have some action spilling over. With college bars and urban clubs located nearby, students have easy access to social activities. Being so close to other universities also makes party life that much more entertaining.

The school is located in Tallahassee, Florida, an area known for its rowdy and niche night life. With this in mind, the FAMU community takes full advantage of the beautiful Florida weather and even more amazing clubs and house parties.

You can’t mention Spelman College’s party life without including Morehouse College. The schools are basically next door to each other. During the day, Spelmanites and Morehouse men attend the same classes and often find themselves at the same functions at night.

Clark Atlanta University joins Spelhouse to create the Atlanta University Center Consortium (AUC), and in addition to sharing a city, the three colleges share the party responsibilities evenly. Around the AUC, students and their greater communities advertise parties, clubs, bars, and concerts for everybody and their mommas! If you ever get sick of AUC functions, there’s so much more to explore throughout Atlanta, a city famous for their strip clubs and hot lemon-pepper wings!

Located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Southern University is home to a vibrant nightlife. From uniquely themed bars to hidden gems, a night out in the city is sure to never disappoint.

For those that prefer to stay close to campus, Southern University students know exactly how to have a great time. After working hard during the day, many enjoy kickbacks and house parties; and with that southern weather, it hardly ever gets too cold to go outside.

With their homecoming deemed the “Greatest Homecoming On Earth” (GHOE), it’s not shocking that NCAT would end up on this list. The university is one of the most diverse HBCUs in the country, so obviously their party scene reflects this.

According to Niche, North Carolina A&T ranks 37 on their list of party schools, which is pretty high out of the 1512 colleges in the nation on the list. Located in the third largest city in North Carolina, the NCAT school is the perfect place to experience all that Greensboro has to offer.

Alabama is home to 14 different HBCUs. With the most HBCUs in the nation, it’s no shock that students and the greater HBCU community call Alabama home. With that being said, Alabama A&M University is known for it’s stellar band and close-knit community, and it’s no surprise that music brings the university together on campus and beyond.

There’s not much to do in Huntsville, Alabama, so AAMU goers have to get creative. Of course Homecoming season brings in thousands from across the country, but on a weekly bias, students and even staff enjoy bars, clubs, and parties on and off campus.

The university, located in Virginia, has over 55 on campus organizations, making it the perfect place to not only find something for all of your interests, but also to experience all that Hampton’s party scene has to offer. The university gets a bad rap for being easy to get lost in parties and other fun, but students know it takes real work to balance an active social life with obtaining your degree.

Going to a Black school in a Black city is an unmatched experience. For students at Morgan State University, living in Baltimore, Maryland gives them the opportunity to be represent beyond the classroom.

If there is a flyer posted on campus, you can bet you’ll know someone going to the function. And for the campus’s main djs, their job is to set the tone for the whole weekend. Outside of their campus, Baltimore’s colorful culture welcomes more than just food. Clubs and events are constantly in rotation and open for the public to enjoy.

Although Xavier University of Louisiana is a school based in Catholic tradition, students who attend the university are more than aware of New Orleans culture. The city known for Mardi Gras is also well-known for its vibrant and one-of-a-kind party life.

Last but certainly not least is Mississippi’s own Jackson State University. Being one of many HBCUs in Mississippi, Jackson State is well-known for its unique majorette culture and diverse Black population.

If you’re trying to party, Jackson State is a great place to wind up. The students have that Southern Hospitality that’s simply entrancing. Mississippi is known for its relaxed but exciting party scene. Filled with southern culture and city life, the Jackson State community never gets bored.
