Score another one for the Roys, as Succession leads the TV nominations in the 27th Annual Critics Choice Awards. The HBO drama received eight nods, followed by limited series Mare of Easttown and Paramount+ drama Evil, each with five.

Fan favorites Pose and This is Us join Succession in the Best Drama Series category, while Insecure and Reservation Dogs are up for Best Comedy Series, and Mare of Easttown competes against The Underground Railroad and WandaVision for Best Limited Series.

In Best Actor in a Drama Series, Sterling K. Brown (This is Us), Mike Colter (Evil) and Billy Porter (Pose) lead a strong category that include Succession’s Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong, as well as Lee Jung-jae in Squid Game.

Best Actress in a Drama Series features nominations for Uzo Aduba (In Treatment) and Michaela Jae Rodriguez (Pose). The supporting categories are Succession heavy with six time Tony-winning Broadway legend Audra McDonald recognized for The Good Fight and Susan Kelchi Watson receiving a nod for This is Us.

The comedy acting categories include Renée Elise Goldsberry (Girls5eva) and Issa Rae (Insecure) for Best Actress, and Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education) for Best Supporting Actor.

William Jackson Harper is a double nominee, receiving nods for Best Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television and Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television for Love Life and The Underground Railroad respectively.

We’re not going to claim these nominations represent a step forward in diversity, as there were categories with no Black nominees. However, there were also several categories with multiple Black nominees, so we guess it’s something.

The real test comes at the ceremony, when we see how many Black artists win awards. Don’t think we haven’t noticed how award shows seem to think the nomination is enough, so Black nominees never actually win.

With that in mind, the 27th Annual Critics Choice Awards airs live Sunday, Jan. 9 at 7 pm on TBS and The CW.
