The Root’s Young, Fabulous and Female event has traveled all over the United States, hitting cities like Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York City, Chicago and now, Dallas. Everything truly is bigger in Texas because the beautiful black women showed up and showed out.

The Young, Fabulous and Female event is presented by Toyota (#ToyotaCHR) and always celebrates the beauty and distinction of professional black women. We invite women to come together, network and be a part of thought-provoking conversations that inspire. Our Dallas event’s theme was “Breaking the Rules.”

So we invited esteemed panelists #SmartBrownGirl Jouelzy, who uses her voice in videos and writing to encourage women of color to define their own success stories; intellectual property attorney Christa Brown-Sanford; ordained itinerant elder and multihyphenate CEO Vashti-Jasmine Saint-Jean; and company director of diversity Kamecia Lambert to shed some light on how they break rules in their fields.

They spoke on everything from what “no” means in business to pushing through romantic woes and expressing femininity to owning when you’re not in the best position in life and making a way to change that.

The stunning attendees (seriously, we have the best-looking YFF crowd) took in every word, often bursting into chatter around some of the more taboo topics. In case you missed it, you can catch the Facebook Live video of the entire panel.

Black women of Dallas met The Root at the Lofty Spaces—a very hip, almost romantic venue where cards were exchanged, wine was sipped, delicious bites were nibbled, selfies and boomerangs were snapped, and knowledge bombs were dropped.

There’s just something about fearless women sharing their truths on what’s worked for them in their careers that can shift a room. YFF is not just an excuse to grab your cutest bag and slip on your fiercest pumps; it’s a celebration and acknowledgment of how we break the rules every day by simply existing. YFF is a moment for us to say to each other: I see you, sis.
