News One is reporting that the husband and sons of terminally ill "At Last" and "Tell Mama" blues singer Etta James have reached a deal on managing her $1 million estate and medical care.
The singer's adult sons, Donto and Sametto, had challenged the decisions of their stepfather, Artis Mills, who married the singer in 1969 and is the estate's conservator. Donto asked a Riverside County judge to appoint him temporary conservator. The family was at odds over the amount of money to be made available to Mills for the care of James, who has been battling dementia, leukemia and kidney ailments.
Mills wanted $500,000, while the sons wanted the amount capped at $100,000. The judge set the amount at $350,000 and allowed Mills to remain as conservator of James' estate.
We don't know what it is about illnesses and funerals that make people lose their minds, but hopefully this judgment ends this ongoing family battle. Instead of spending quality time with James, they are fighting one another over her estate. Sadly, they will see that it's all a losing game when James and the bulk of her money are no longer here to be fought over.
