On Sunday night, Saturday Night Live celebrated its 40th anniversary with a live three-and-a-half-hour show. Past and present SNL actors and hosts graced the stage to pay homage to a show that has lasted the test of time.

One of the most anticipated guests of the night was, of course, Eddie Murphy. After spending what felt like 40 hours waiting, Chris Rock reminded people there would never be a “next Eddie Murphy” during a touching introduction.

And then it happened. Murphy came to the stage.

“Hey, isn’t this an incredible night, this night?” Murphy said. “This show is such a big part of who I am and my life. And I’m so happy to be back here. It’s a magical feeling. Actually it feels like going back to my old high school, kind of. It’s a good feeling. I’m really happy that so many people here value the stuff that I did 35 years ago. It makes me feel really happy. I will always love this show and … let’s have some more show. Let’s have a big round of applause for everybody.”

And then an awkward moment happened when someone in the control booth didn’t cut to a commercial.

“I thought that right there you guys were gonna do the … Well, then let’s do it again," he said. "You know, this has been a helluva night. A real magical evening. You’re always going to be a part of my life.”

And then, that was it.  The whole Internet wondered, what in the world just happened?

If you looked up the word “uneventful” in the dictionary, you’d see it defined as Murphy’s return to SNL.
