You know we love a “Stars! They’re just like us!” moment here at The Glow Up, and this week’s comes from our favorite Insecure and adventurous yet Awkward Black Girl, Issa Rae.

Sitting down with Harper’s Bazaar and a bottle of Veuve Clicquot, Rae plays the classic “Never Have I Ever” game, running through a gamut of universally awkward scenarios—most of which she’s apparently experienced, because ... sips were had.

Our favorite moments? When Rae admits she’s sobbed while looking at the (formerly) low balance in her bank account (“they should have a limit on the number of times you can overdraft,” she says. “Word,” we say). Then, there’s the time she mistakenly congratulated the wrong winner at the Emmys (where she was memorably “rooting for everybody black,”), and that time she completely lost her cool when approaching Rihanna at the 2018 Met Gala—whom we’re pretty sure will eternally out-cool all of us.

And according to Rae, we all need to stop picking up the check on first dates—presuming we’re the invitee and not the inviter—because chilvalry doesn’t have to be dead yet.

Matter of fact, bump that: if we’re playing otherwise traditional hetero roles and have to go so far as to ask you out on a date (doubtful, because we’re awkward like that), the least you could do is pick up the tab, to let us know the interest is mutual.
