The Department of Justice will not be filing any charges in the 2013 death of Georgia high schooler Kendrick Johnson, whose body was found in a rolled-up wrestling mat at his school, with officials saying there was "insufficient evidence to support federal criminal charges," 11Alive reports.
According to the report, Johnson's family met with the DOJ Monday in Macon, Ga., to hear the department's findings on the case. Investigators reportedly interviewed nearly 100 people, reviewed "tens of thousands of emails and text messages," as well as surveillance footage from the school in their investigation.
"After extensive investigation into this tragic event, federal investigators determined that there is insufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that someone or some group of people willfully violated Kendrick Johnson’s civil rights or committed any other prosecutable federal crime. Accordingly, the investigation into this incident has been closed without the filing of federal criminal charges," a release read.
Johnson's family have insisted that the teen was murdered. Local investigators have called the death an accident.
