As “Bob Marley: One Love” continues its success at the box office, we’re all waiting for the next big music biopic. One we’ve had on our radar for a while is that of Dionne Warwick, for which “A Thousand and One” breakout star Teyana Taylor is set to take the lead role.
While accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Urban One Honors, the “Walk On By” singer offered a small tease about what fans can expect from the unnamed project — though in true Warwick fashion, she didn’t give away too much. She revealed that she’s “pleased” with Taylor and the prep work she’s done.
“She has done research out the yang yang,” Warwick told Vibe. “I mean, she knows me better than I know myself now.”
She describes the film as a combination of the 2021 documentary, “Dionne Warwick: Don’t Make Me Over,” and her memoir, “My Life, As I See It.”
“It’ll tell us some of the escapades that I have been on, and the results of it. So it’s going to be quite interesting,” she said.
There’s no word on other casting details, but if it’s a story of Warwick’s life and career, we have to assume that legendary songwriter Burt Bacharach — as well as her close friends Gladys Knight and Patti LaBelle — might appear in the story.
Warwick recently found herself topping the charts again when Doja Cat sampled “Walk On By” for her hit single, “Paint the Town Red.” Here’s hoping that the biopic will spark a renewed interest in her spectacular catalog.
We don’t know how many of her unforgettable classics will be included in the project, but if “I Say a Little Prayer,” “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again,” “I’ll Never Love This Way Again,” “Do You Know the Way to Jose” and “Alfie” aren’t involved we have serious questions.
Dionne Warwick is someone most of us have been familiar with our whole lives, but that doesn’t mean we know all the details of her journey. A biopic following her life and career should be fascinating and we can’t wait to see how much she decides to reveal.
