Donald Trump’s former spiritual adviser Robert Morris has confessed to “inappropriate sexual behavior” with a 12-year-old in an incident that allegedly happened on Christmas in 1982, according to the Christian Post.

Cindy Clemishire stated that she was abused by Morris, a Gateway Church pastor, until 1987. Clemishire said she tried to sue Morris in 2005, but her allegations didn’t garner much attention.

Morris confessed to his actions in a statement to the Christian Post, though he never addressed his victim’s age:

“When I was in my early twenties, I was involved in inappropriate sexual behavior with a young lady in a home where I was staying. It was kissing and petting and not intercourse, but it was wrong. This behavior happened on several occasions over the next few years. In March of 1987, this situation was brought to light, and it was confessed and repented of. I submitted myself to the Elders of Shady Grove Church and the young lady’s father. They asked me to step out of ministry and receive counseling and freedom ministry, which I did. Since that time, I have walked in purity and accountability in this area.”

“In October of 1989, Debbie and I met with her and her family, and I asked their forgiveness, and they graciously forgave me,” Morris said. “This sin was dealt with correctly by confession and repentance, which I did in 1987 and 1989.”

Morris was never criminally charged because when Clemishire decided to take legal action she was told the statute of limitations for criminal or civil action had most likely expired.

In 2016, Morris was appointed to Trump’s evangelical advisory board as part of his presidential campaign. In 2020, Trump praised two pastors — one of whom was Morris — for attending a roundtable discussion with faith leaders in Texas.

“They’re great people. Great people with a great reputation. I have to say that,” Trump stated. “Great reputation. And Gateway church – the team has been incredible in hosting us.”

Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung stated that Trump was not aware of the allegations. “[Morris] does not have a role with the 2024 campaign,” Cheung said.

“President Trump’s broad appeal among faith communities across the country is a testament to his unwavering commitment to upholding faith and the protection of religious liberties.”
