When Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter was first accused of raping a 13-year-old girl alongside Sean “Diddy” Combs, the Roc Nation founder made it clear he plans to fight these horrific allegations and the lawyer in charge of it all, Tony Buzbee.

First there was an Instagram statement and now in his first legal response, Jay-Z and his attorney, Alex Spiro, made a request demanding his accuser’s name be revealed. The motion comes just one day after the anonymous accuser named Carter in her suit.

According to the motion obtained by E! News, Carter “is respectfully seeking either dismissal of the allegations or disclosure of the Plaintiff’s identity.”

The civil lawsuit was originally filed by Jane Doe in October. At that time, only Diddy was named as a defendant along with a mysterious “Celebrity A.” But on Sunday (Dec. 8), the suit was refiled to include Hov’s name, according to HipHopDX.

Did Jay-Z Sue First as ‘John Doe?’

Now, here’s where things get tricky...

Three weeks before the suit was refiled, lawyer Buzbee took to Instagram to reveal he’d been sued by “a ‘powerful’ John Doe” who wants his name kept out of Diddy drama. Buzbee said, “The case filed against my firm is not only without legal merit, it is laughable” and it is “a last-ditch attempt to stop me from revealing names in public lawsuits.”

Now that Jay-Z’s name has officially been sued, people are wondering if Hov was that “powerful John Doe” who tried to stop his name from coming out. On X, user @3y3swid3open said “This makes Jay Z statement even worse now! He is obviously the ‘John Doe.’”

Another user, @honeygirltru, posted a gif suggesting they aren’t shocked Jay allegedly sued Buzbee.

According to the New York Times, Jay-Z sent Buzbee a demand letter threatening further legal actions, which makes the timing of everything even more impeccable. Not to mention, Carter is now asking his accuser to reveal herself.

Hov’s motion said, “Mr. Carter should not have to defend himself in the brightest of spotlights against an accuser who hides in complete darkness while leveling allegations that describe the purported acts occurring in the plain sight of witnesses who could refute the plaintiff’s claims if only her identity was revealed.”

On top of it all, the motion noted how Buzbee, the lawyer representing Jane Doe, has “a history of targeting celebrities by making false allegations of misconduct.” Additionally, Jay’s team said this case “is about retaliating against the rare target who would not pay.” A judge has not ruled on the motion yet.

X user @GxldSociety called Carter’s motion ironic given he could be the “powerful John Doe” in question.

Previously, Carter claimed the lawsuit was an attempt to extort him for money. the mogul even went as far as to tell attorney Buzbee “I implore you to file a criminal complaint, not a civil one!!” according to Jay’s Instagram post.

The anonymous accuser is seeking unspecified damages. The lawsuit against both Carter and Combs is filed under New York’s Victims of Gender-Motivated Violence Protection Act.
