It seems that Republicans are hell bent on making the lives of millions of unemployed people harder. The Republicans blocked legislation that would extend unemployment benefits for the nation's unemployed. Governors who had hoped for additional federal aid will now have to consider more budget cuts, tax increases and layoffs of state workers. Senate Democrats cut billions from the bill in an attempt to attract enough Republican votes to to subvert the filibuster. The 57-41 vote fell three votes short of the 60 required to break the GOP filibuster. More budget cuts, more unemployed people without benefits and more tax increases is better than extending benefits that employees paid into? This filibuster is unthinkable and, in our minds, unconscionable. Glad the wealthy Republican senators will sleep well tonight, because the unemployed definitely will not.
