There were so many lingering storylines in the box-office hit Creed. Director Ryan Coogler seemed to purposely leave the movie open for sequels, and that may happen sooner rather than later.
According to Variety, MGM is aiming for a November 2017 release date of a sequel, but the studio hasn’t said whether Coogler will return as director. MGM CEO Gary Barber said that there is a release plan, but it’s not set in stone as of yet.
Creed has grossed $105 million in domestic ticket sales, and Sylvester Stallone won a Golden Globe for best supporting actor at Sunday’s award show.
One issue standing in the way of Coogler’s return is that he’s scheduled to direct the upcoming Marvel Black Panther movie, which could prove to be a conflict with a November 2017 release for a Creed sequel.
“Ryan has some ideas of going forward and backward and actually seeing Rocky and Apollo together,” Stallone said. “Think of The Godfather 2. That’s what he was thinking of, which was kind of ambitious.”
Making the sequel set in the past would be an interesting route to take. In any event, a Creed sequel, or even a prequel, is sure to be another box-office hit.
