Just weeks before Anthony Mackie’s new film “Captain America: Brave New World” hit theaters, it looks like he’s already causing quite a stir online. Unfortunately, the stir is making him the target for some conservative fans.
Things all started when Mackie was discussing his character during a promotional event in Rome. While conversations like that are par for the course, it was what he said about his popular role as the new Captain America that has folks on the right calling him out on X/Twitter for being “woke.” Speaking to the audience about what values he thinks his character represents, Mackie said in part:
“For me, Captain America represents a lot of different things. And I don’t think the term ‘America’ should be one of those representations. It’s about a man who keeps his word, who has honor, dignity, and integrity. Someone who is trustworthy and dependable.”
Once Mackie’s word got out and began circulating online, folks on that other part of the internet began dragging him and sharing their two cents on the matter.
“Captain America represents a lot of things to me and America isn’t one of them.- Anthony Mackie (to be remembered when the film flops) They are scared to show any form of patriotism. It also shows he does not understand the character or what the character is,” wrote one user on X/Twitter.
“If you don’t think “America” should be in the name Captain America then quit and move to Canada...Yeah I won’t be seeing the new Captain America. Movie looks trash anyways,” said another.
“JUST IN: Anthony Mackie says Captain America shouldn’t represent America. Yes, you read that right. Hollywood is so deep in the woke abyss they want to erase America from its own superhero. Hard pass on that new Captain “Whatever” movie,” another wrote.
“Anthony Mackie, the new Captain America, says that he doesn’t think Captain America...should represent America? It’s literally in the name...GET THE WOKE OUT OF HOLLYWOOD!!!” one other user said.
I don’t know about you but, I feel like there are more important things for people to be upset about right now but if conservatives want to blow a gasket over a fake comic book character—then by all means.
