Turns out that former Secretary of State Colin L. Powell is just like the rest of us black folks and believes that Donald J. Trump is a "national disgrace" and an "international pariah," according to emails reportedly hacked and leaked online Tuesday.
According to BuzzFeed News, emails from Powell's account read that the GOP presidential nominee piled onto a "racist" movement when he joined those who believed that President Barack Obama was not an American citizen.
"Yup, the whole birther movement was racist," Powell wrote in an email to a former aide, BuzzFeed reports.
"That’s what the 99 percent believe. When Trump couldn’t keep that up, he said he also wanted to see if the certificate noted that he was a Muslim. As I have said before, ‘What if he was?’ Muslims are born as Americans everyday,” the email continued, according to BuzzFeed.
An aide for Powell confirmed to the New York Times, "They are his emails."
DCLeaks posted the stolen emails online and has previously posted hacked documents from Democrats and Republicans, BuzzFeed reports.
"We are confirming that General Powell has been hacked and that they are his emails. We have no further comment at this time," an aide to Powell told the New York Times Wednesday.
In the emails, Powell also criticized Hillary Clinton, noting that the Democratic presidential candidate’s "minions" were attempting to "drag me in[to]" the controversy surrounding Clinton's use of a private email server during her tenure as secretary of state.
The Times reports that during her "interview with the FBI into the use of the email server, Mrs. Clinton told investigators that Mr. Powell had advised her to use a personal email account, according to notes of the interview disclosed to members of Congress by the bureau last month."
