At least two churches in two separate states were vandalized over the weekend with Donald Trump-inspired slurs, the Indianapolis Star reports.
According to the report, St. David's Episcopal Church in Bean Blossom, Ind., was vandalized sometime Saturday night, with tags on its walls depicting a swastika, an anti-gay slur and the words "Heil Trump," the site notes.
Miles away in Silver Spring, Md., a sign advertising the Spanish-language service for the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour was also vandalized Saturday night, the sign cut in several places and marred by the words "Trump nation. Whites only." The racially charged words were also smeared on the wall of the parish's memorial garden, according to the report.
People in the different communities rallied around the churches in the wake of the vandalism.
Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington rallied with church members and priests to stand in solidarity with the Silver Spring church. In Indiana, the Rev. Kelsey Hutto, the priest in charge at St. David's, said that although she was saddened to find the graffiti, it must mean that the church is doing something right.
"Well, we must be doing something right," Hutto told the news site. "We stated one time that doing the right thing was not always the popular thing. We were targeted for a reason, and in our mind, it was for a good reason."
As the newspaper notes, the Southern Poverty Law Center has reported that more than 200 incidents of harassment and intimidation have occurred across the country since Election Day.
