In a recent interview with New York magazine, Chris Rock discussed a variety of subjects ranging from Bill Cosby to Ferguson, Mo., and racial progress in America.
Rock took issue with the term “race relations” because it doesn’t capture what is really going on in America, especially after Ferguson.
“When we talk about race relations in America or racial progress, it’s all nonsense. There are no race relations,” he said. “White people were crazy. Now they’re not as crazy. To say that black people have made progress would be to say they deserve what happened to them before.”
Rock also acknowledged that having the first black person as president isn’t exactly black progress but white progress. “There’s been black people qualified to be president for hundreds of years,” Rock stated.
The comic also spoke about his children being privileged and being able to encounter nice white people, and hoping that America keeps producing more nice white people.
One point in the interview that may draw a lot of raised brows is when Rock spoke about Bill Cosby. When asked how he feels about Cosby and the recent allegations, Rock tried to remain “neutral.”
“I don’t know what to say. What do you say? I hope it’s not true. That’s all you can say. I really do. I grew up on Cosby. I love Cosby, and I just hope it’s not true. It’s a weird year for comedy. We lost Robin, we lost Joan and we kind of lost Cosby,” Rock told the magazine.
