The six-term mayor said that it is time to "move on" as he made his announcement with his wife standing by his side. Daley's announcement sets off a power scramble that has been stymied by his 21 years in office. Daley's wife has been battling metastatic breast cancer since 2002, and he has been under fire for a $655 million budget shortfall. "Simply put, it's time," said Daley, 68.
