An 11-year-old South Side Chicago boy was killed Saturday when a carjacker fleeing from police slammed into his family’s vehicle, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Donovan Anthony Turnage was headed to the barbershop with his father and older brother to get a Christmas haircut when the crash occurred about 12:30 p.m., the report shows. The incident began when police officers on patrol observed an armed carjacking and began pursuing the driver of the stolen vehicle, the report shows. The chase came to a halt when the stolen vehicle crashed into the Turnages’ Suburban near a major intersection. The suspect reportedly escaped.
Turnage was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago’s Comer Children’s Hospital at 1:35 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
“He took our angel from us,” the boy’s mother, Annette Turnage, 51, told the Sun-Times.
Losing him just days before Christmas “is very painful,” she told the Sun-Times. “He was looking forward to opening his presents on Christmas.”
