On Monday, “Breakfast Club” hosts Charlamagne Tha God, DJ Envy and Jess Hilarious sat down with Republican National Committee co-chair Lara Trump. It wasn’t long before they asked Lara about her father-in-law and his treatment of the exonerated Central Park Five.
The group, who were wrongfully convicted of raping a jogger in 1989, are now suing Donald Trump for defamation. During the interview, DJ Envy also asked about Trump’s history of lawsuits in which he was accused of not renting to Black people.
‘That’s ridiculous. I’ve known this man for sixteen years. There was never any proof of anything with the houses; they settled that. There was no admission of anything there,” Lara responded.
Charlamagne, however, let out a full-on cackle when Lara firmly stated: “Donald Trump was really beneficial to the Black community when he was in the White House. I will say I’ve never seen this man say a racist thing.”
Following his bout of laughter, Lara asked: “Why is that funny, Charlamagne?” The star’s response was pretty straight-forward.
“It’s hysterical,” Charlamagne retorted. “People act like there’s no such thing as Google or they don’t have TV or radio.” That’s when the show cut to Donald Trump saying a slew of racist things over the years, including the time he called Mexicans “rapists.”
Lara continued to defend the former president. “This is a man who was beloved by so many people in this country, and he was friends with everybody,” she insisted.
“If you’re an American citizen, Donald Trump doesn’t care [about] your religion. He doesn’t care what you look like.”
However, Charlamagne pointed out how dangerous his rhetoric has been and also said Trump pushed the lie that Haitian immigrants were eating pets in Springfield, Ohio earlier this year.
“When you make these broad generalizations, you do hurt the Haitian Americans that are here, the Mexican Americans that are here. They all get labeled and villainized and demonized,” the host said.
Lara replied, saying her father-in-law’s words have been “misconstrued” and remained steadfast that he’s not racist, though all evidence pointed to the contrary.
Just last week, Charlamagne hosted a town hall with Vice President Kamala Harris in which the pair discussed reparations, her prosecutorial record and the proliferation of disinformation.
