Last week, Chance the Rapper met with Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner to discuss the Chicago Public Schools system and its current disarray. But the Grammy Award-winning rapper wasn’t pleased with the meeting and has decided to take matters into his own hands.
On Monday, Chance announced that he’ll make a $1 million donation to CPS for arts education.
After Chance’s meeting with Rauner on Friday, he vowed to come up with a plan to help the school system. Currently, CPS has a $129 million budget deficit that could cause the school year to end 20 days early.
In addition to his own donation, Chance, who was born and raised in Chicago, called for others to match his donation.
“Gov. Rauner broke his promise to Chicago children a few months ago as a result of an admitted emotional reaction,” Chance said, according to the Chicago Tribune. “Our kids should not be held hostage because of political positioning.
“This isn’t about politics, this isn’t about posturing. This is about taking care of the kids. Everybody and their mama knows about what’s going on in Chicago, it’s constantly talked about. But we’re about to enhance the conversation,” the rapper continued.
Chance’s website has been updated with a link where people can help the school system, too.
