(The Root) — The Sundance-award-winning film Middle of Nowhere, directed by Ava DuVernay and starring Emayatzy Corinealdi, Omari Hartwick and David Oyelowo, will be making its theater debut this weekend. The black indie film portrays a woman caught between two men: her husband, who is serving a five-year prison sentence, and a new admirer she has befriended.
Beginning this Friday, Oct. 12, the movie will appear in select theaters in five major cities: New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia. Theaters in Chicago; Miami; Detroit; Seattle; Oakland, Calif.; Houston; and Cherry Hill, N.J., will begin showing the film on Oct. 19.
DuVernay, one of our Root 100 honorees, recently made history by becoming the first African American to be crowned best director at the Sundance Film Festival this year. So far her Middle of Nowhere has received stellar reviews and stamps of approval from the New York Times, Oprah Winfrey, Tavis Smiley, T.J. Holmes and several others.
