The embattled director of the Philadelphia Housing Authority, Carl Greene, has some explaining to do. Greene, who was paid more than $300,000 last year — that's more than the mayor of Philadelphia or the governor of Pennsylvania makes, for those keeping track — has messed up royally. Pennsylvania media outlets have discovered and reported that Greene settled four sexual harassment claims over the past five years. No, your eyes are not deceiving you: four. Greene faced a harassment suit in his previous job in Detroit, but Gov. Ed Rendell, then Philadelphia's mayor, hired him anyway, with a clause in his contract that he could still keep his job with the city of Philadelphia if found guilty in Detroit. Again, I'm not making this up. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Greene gave work to politically connected law firms, pressured employees to donate to his favorite nonprofit and threw a party using PHA funds for a board member. We won't mention the fact that with all of that money he made, his house is in foreclosure and he disappeared from work for several days, resulting in his paid suspension. Where does he think he is? Detroit or Columbia, S.C.? Shaking our heads over here at The Root.
