When the temps sharply dropped in New York last week, Cardi B literally handed out some warmth. The Bronx-born star was spotted at the Marlboro Houses housing project in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Gravesend last Thursday, giving out free winter coats to those in need.

As expected, crowds swarmed to see the reality star-turned-rapper, with WABC reporting that metal barricades were needed for the hundreds of fans.

“I didn’t know it was gonna be so big,” Cardi B told the network. “My homeboy Chuck, he told me, ‘Hey, let’s give out coats to our community, I know somebody who wants to give out coats in Marlboro,’ and I said, ‘I’m pulling out, what’s up?’”

And her good deeds weren’t unappreciated by the residents of the 30-building complex.

“It’s nice, it’s very nice that she’s doing this for the people, really, because us people over here need a lot of help,” a woman told WABC.

Cardi’s good works came a month before the second annual One Warm Coat day on Nov. 15, which is sponsored by the nonprofit One Warm Coat. The 26-year-old organization is the only one supporting national coat drives, providing volunteers the resources needed to hold a successful event, as well as maintaining an active database of coat drives across the country. This year, the organization is once again teaming up with retailer J. Crew for an in-store coat drive which could earn donators a $25 discount.
