Hey y’all, it’s me, the resident Cardi B stan at The Root. While your “queen”* spent her weekend generally being a jerk, wealth-shaming people and getting bloggers fired just for offering a valid critique of her work, my queen spent her weekend being pregnant and fabulous—and breaking records on the Billboard list.
Not only did “I Like It,” featuring Bad Bunny and J Balvin move into the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 this week, but it made Cardi B the first female rapper to have two No. 1s on that list. “Bodak Yellow,” her debut hit, was No. 1 for three weeks beginning Oct. 7, 2017.
Additionally, as Billboard notes, Cardi is the first artist to have two Hot 100 No. 1 hits from a debut album since Macklemore and Ryan Lewis did it in 2013. She is the first soloist to have a pair of Hot 100 No. 1 hits from a debut album since Bruno Mars did it in 2010 with “Just the Way You Are” and “Grenade” from his Doo-Wops & Hooligans album.
As a female soloist, she is the first to have two Hot 100 No. 1 hits from a debut album in this decade. Lady Gaga was the last to accomplish that feat in 2009.
I’m happy for Cardi, and I want to see her continue to win.
*I’m not against Nicki; I just want her to be less of a jackass.
