Fox Sports is reporting that former Auburn University quarterback Cam Newton is talking too much. Newton, who has been plagued by questions about his character related to an investigation over his alleged violation of NCAA rules, told Sports Illustrated's Peter King, "I see myself not only as a football player, but an entertainer and icon." Newton is expected to have a good chance of going in the top 10 of the NFL draft, so owners may not want to hear that a player who only played as a starter one season before bouncing to the NFL thinks of himself as an "entertainer and icon."
Newton should be proud of his accomplishments, but humility should be somewhere in the equation, especially having dodged the NCAA-violations bullet that brought down a much more successful Reggie Bush. Did we mention that the investigation is ongoing? Newton needs to add strategic thinker and communicator to his list of how he sees himself, because there is no fat lady in football — just opera.
