Telfar Global rocked New York Fashion Week on Friday night. Studding the stage with Telfar’s “framily” of musical youths were Dev Hynes tapping the keys; Ian Isiah, aka “Big Shugga,” up front; and Kelela, Oyinda, 070 Shake and Kelsey Lu belting out tunes, along with a surprise appearance by Telfar himself on the mic, crooning a thankful hymn to the customers who give him life.
This season, the designer showed how his club-kid sensibilities could soar to sophisticated heights. “Ready, set, party” was the theme of this collection, which will look at home on rich rockers from Rome to Rio. Think kick-flare jeans cut from selvage denim and decorated with studs, or trimmed with outsize suede cuffs. And, as always, there was his signature sexy cutouts elevating jeans, T-shirts and tunics to a whole new gender-fluid level. The message was sexy for all—as long as you do it your way.
Telfar’s collection is so beloved by so many because it’s meant to be customized—pulled apart so that, as the designer told Vogue, “You just won’t find leather and denim jeans like ours, or a leather jacket that detaches into a vest.”
Red, black and inky blue-black indigo denim were the core colors of the collection; it’s my prediction that red denim is going to be the one wardrobe update for fall that everyone, including fashionistas, will flock to when the leaves change colors in September.
The best part? You’ll be able to vote on what you’d like Telfar to produce and be able to purchase his collection in the Telfar pop-up shop hosted by Century 21 in lower Manhattan. The Glow Up will be sure to let you know when it’s time to shop your rock ’n’ roll heart out when the store opens in a few weeks!
