With the death of Fidel Castro, there has been a resurgence of interest in his role as an advocate for countries in Africa and the Caribbean. One of those countries was Jamaica, where Castro would help build schools and hospitals and train Jamaican workers.
In the 1970s, Castro developed a friendship and partnership with then-Jamaican Prime Minister Michael Manley. According to Casey Gane-McCalla, author of the book Inside the CIA’s Secret War in Jamaica, the CIA launched a covert war in Jamaica to take down Manley and replace him with pro-American leader Edward Seaga.
The book tells the story of the 1976 destabilization of Manley’s democratic socialist government in Jamaica, the events leading up to it and its aftermath, including the assassination attempt on Bob Marley and the rise of the notorious Jamaican Shower Posse.
