It’s no secret that black women invented style. As the daughter of a black woman who stays dressed-down-to-the-ground, I have come to associate black women with elegance, grace and a lot of pizazz. We slay magazine covers and shut down runways, all while becoming fashion icons who have even used style to discuss larger social issues. Don’t get it twisted: The slay goes down, regardless of age. Perhaps black women’s style is innate? Essence Fest 2019 certainly makes an argument in the affirmative. The Glow Up’s very own Maiysha Kai—who is a forever fashion model known for giving face-realness—took to the floor of the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center to check out all of the Essence Fest lewks. Most importantly, Kai asks festival goers how they define their style. See the entire video above.
