Engagement season is alive and thriving at the 2024 Paris Olympics. French athlete, Alice Finot, completed her 3,000 meter steeplechase at the Olympics and shortly after her celebration, she proposed to her boyfriend.
Finot told herself that if she completed her race under nine minutes, then she would propose, according to the Associated Press.
Nine is her lucky number, her and her boyfriend were together for nine years and she ran under nine minutes so she believed it was fated that she propose after her accomplishment.
Additionally, Finot stated that she doesn’t like to do things other people do and felt compelled to pop the question because it was up to her.
But, Black women were not having it at all.
Twitter replies were flooded with either Black women condemning the proposal and Black men condemning Black women for commenting on the proposal.
“There will be a lot of convulsing on Black American women twitter tonight,” one comment said in response to the viral video.
“In front of the whole world to see too?!? I would rather swim in the Seine with my mouth wide open,” another comment said.
This follows after another Olympian was proposed to. Badminton player, Huang Yaqiong, was also proposed to by her teammate after winning gold.
Fans erupted in disapproval by saying the teammate made her win “about him” by proposing shortly after her major accomplishment.
When and where marriage proposals take place have been long debated within the Black community.
Another instance presented itself after a new member presentation for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. The proposal took place a little after the presentation was over.
This followed with various TikTok videos booming online about the way the proposal ensued.
It’s safe to say that the internet hates proposals when major life events are occurring simultaneously.
