The announcement that President Joe Biden is dropping out of the 2024 presidential race sent shockwaves through the internet. Now that Vice President Kamala Harris is considered the presumptive Democratic nominee for president, a familiar name trended on social media. Harris moving to the top of the ticket means “SNL” vet Maya Rudolph could see a huge uptick in her public profile.
The “Loot” star regularly plays the vice president on “Saturday Night Live,” receiving raves from viewers and Kamala. The show is known for doing some of its best work in election years, with the actors playing the candidates often coming out of the election cycle with big career bumps. Think of what playing Sarah Palin did for Tina Fey.
It’s been a big week for Rudolph, as she also garnered three Primetime Emmy nominations. She received nods for Lead Actress in a Comedy for her AppleTV+ series “Loot,” Guest Actress in a Comedy for hosting the Mother’s Day episode of “SNL” and Outstanding Original Music And Lyrics for her danceable monologue anthem, “I’m Your Mother.”
Between her possible return as Kamala and all this well-deserved recognition, social media is definitely ready for Maya Rudolph’s world takeover.
One fan can’t wait for her global domination, writing on X, “We are about to see a WHOLE LOT MORE of Maya Rudolph and I’m here for it.”
Since they’re almost twins at this point, one person wrote, “Kamala Harris is just a Maya Rudolph impression of Kamala Harris.”
While acknowledging what a big deal being prominently featured during election season is, another viewer posted, “I’m normally of the opinion that you gotta give an existing cast member the chance to play the big candidate in the cold opens on @nbcsnl, but @MayaRudolph‘s Kamala Harris is just too good. Give her what she wants and make it happen.”
Noting her Emmy nominations and the possibility of increased screen time, one person wrote, “It has been an incredible week for Maya Rudolph’s career.”
“Are you telling me we get Maya Rudolph EVERY WEEK? We win!,” wrote one fan who wants all the time they can get with the “Bridesmaids” actress.
Understanding that we will see a lot of her through November, one user wrote on X, “Maya Rudolph’s Momala is gonna be everywhere for 3 straight months.”
“Saturday Night Live” Season 50 will probably premiere in September, but NBC hasn’t confirmed an official date yet. Let’s hope they’re already in negotiations with Maya for multiple appearances.
