(The Root) — Tyler Perry took the brunt of black Hollywood's criticism on Wednesday's Don't Sleep! Hosted by T.J. Holmes.

"I was all for Tyler Perry when he started out, because everyone needs a push when they're starting out, but he's been making the same crap over and over again." —Armond White
Highlight: There's a camp of black movie watchers who love Tyler Perry, and there's a group that hates him, too. Regardless of where you end up when that line is drawn in the sand, we can all agree that he's mainstream.
On last night's Don't Sleep! T.J. Holmes addressed filmmaking in black Hollywood when there seems to be a quota on the number of mainstream films that are released. Is it hating when people like directors John Singleton and Victoria Mahoney and film critic Armond White say that they wished the Tyler Perrys of the world weren't representing them at the box offices?
Plus, who knew that Samuel L. Jackson was bringing in the bread like that? That's the very big number of the night.
