If you haven’t noticed, the top weekend-box-office numbers for the last several weeks show that black star power reigns. Straight Outta Compton and The War Room have been blockbusters, and this weekend, a new movie took the No. 1 spot.

The Perfect Guy, starring Sanaa Lathan, Michael Ealy and Morris Chestnut, secured the No. 1 spot and gave M. Night Shyamalan’s The Visit a run for its money. The thriller stars Lathan as a successful businesswoman who begins dating a new man (Michael Ealy), just as her former boyfriend (Morris Chestnut) resurfaces. So as not to give away any spoilers, let’s just say someone is just a tad bit crazy and he plays it very well.

According to CNN, The Perfect Guy made $26.7 million this past weekend and was shown in 2,221 theaters.

“It really killed in the South and on the East Coast. This is a big win for us, and no one does the sex-thriller genre better than Clint Culpepper’s Screen Gems,” said Sony distribution chief Rory Bruer. “If your films resonate well with your core audience, they are going to show up.”

On social media, Ealy took an active role in thanking his fans for seeing the movie.
