If former Republican Rep. J.C. Watts thinks his endorsement of Newt Gingrich will help the presidential contender score with African-American voters, he has something else coming.
The former Oklahoma representative announced his support of the former House speaker today.
Watts, the first African American to win a statewide election in Oklahoma, retired in 2003 to work with corporate clients to represent their interests "before domestic and international governments."
The endorsement won't do much for Gingrich, since Oklahoma is already a red state. Additionally, Watts' cachet as a Republican doesn't hold the same weight it held a decade ago. His endorsement is just another notch in Gingrich's belt. What Gingrich needs to worry about is staving off Ron Paul and landing himself key newspaper endorsements in upcoming battleground states, which he has so far failed to accomplish.
