During the Civil Rights Era, our people endured struggles and sacrifices in order for us to live life as we know it. However, they had to survive the likes of a horror film to do so. And most time, they did not make it.
Black folks who lived anywhere between the 1800s and the 1960s were at risk of being senselessly murdered and mutilated for no other reason than being Black. We couldn’t imagine, in our day, hearing that Youth Sunday was cancelled because a white supremacist hate gang blew up the church. Nor could we imagine finding our loved ones were senselessly murdered by KKK members and realizing the police had no plans of prosecuting them because they were in on it too.
Even our leaders were subject to the most inhumane killings but nevertheless, the way they fought to the very end made their deaths the most honorable. The documentation of these cruel crimes against the Black community are what allow us to appreciate where we are today.
These are the real killings, leading up to and through the Civil Rights Movement.
