Performance artist Nate Hill's latest project, "Trophy Scarves," is making the rounds on Instagram and Twitter. In the photo series, Hill travels to the homes of white women and asks them to strip and lifelessly drape themselves around his neck.
What was the impetus for this project? "Well, there are people who see certain races as status symbols, and someone had to comment on that," Hill told Vice magazine.
Hill tells the mag that he is satirically critiquing interracial dating and the idea that black men couple with white women to achieve a particular social status. (It should be said here that we know that the vast majority of black men are married to black women. Further, most successful black men are also married to black women. Psychologist Ivory Toldson breaks it all down here and here.)
Hill also told Vice that's he's blocked his wife on Twitter and he'll probably do the same on Instagram, because, well, she doesn't always get his art.
