CHICAGO: On night three of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, the one and only Oprah made a surprise appearance in her hometown to endorse Kamala Harris for President. Wearing a pristine purple pantsuit, the media mogul had some choice words for the Trump campaign and for those who “who seek to divide and then conquer.”
Oprah used the platform to encourage Americans to work together instead of being divided. She also made a point to attendees that we don’t ask if our neighbors have citizenship, who they’re married to or if they are “childless cat ladies.” Oprah aptly pointed out that when the house is on fire, we go ahead and rescue the cat, too.
Conservatives on X were quick to post old photos of Oprah with Harvey Weinstein and an interview she did with Trump to counter her words. However, Black folks understood the magnitude of her remarks and the moment of the star being on the DNC stage.
X user @mayaonstage tweeted a clip of the speech and captioned it: “Oprah!! I just want her to close this speech out with “You get a democracy, and you get a democracy, and you get a democracy!” which referenced the famous prize giveaways on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”
Another X user, @OfficialEJT, was incredulous at the fact that Oprah was at the Democratic National Convention. “Oprah??!? Oprah Winfrey?!! Oh it’s official now. She is winning that election!” With how bad the right is panicking, a point was definitely made.
Jerusalem Demsas, who works as a staff writer at The Atlantic, shared the electrifying clip of when the audience erupted into a chant of “’U-S-A’ after Oprah says electing the daughter of immigrants would be the best of America.”
Oprah also quoted Congressman John Lewis at the podium by saying “no matter what ship our ancestors arrived on, we are all in the same boat now.” She also reiterated that “democracy and respect are the ballot” and sung Kamala’s name at the end of her speech. As @_MissLeandra pointed out, “Oprah knows she loves to talk sing.”
Oprah’s address reminded Democrats of the joy that lies ahead with a White House run by VP Harris and her running mate Tim Walz.
