Black Bingeworthy TV Picks To Watch Over The Holiday
The Bidens final ‘The National Christmas Tree Lighting,’ award nominated ‘The Day of the Jackal’ and Aldis Hodge in ‘Cross’ are among winter’s best TV picks.
‘Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist’ - Peacock
The wild true story behind the heist that rocked Atlanta in 1970 comes to life in this star-studded limited series with Kevin Hart, Taraji P. Henson, Terrence Howard and Samuel L. Jackson.
‘How to Die Alone’ Season 1 - Hulu
Natasha Rothwell is an airport worker who decides to shake up her predictable life in this off the wall comedy. We cannot recommend this show highly enough. It’s smart, funny, heartbreaking and unpredictable. Natasha Rothwell is a national treasure who we will officially watch in anything.
‘Agatha All Along’ - Disney +
“SNL” vet Sasheer Zamata joins the coven alongside Kathryn Hahn and Patti LuPone in the “WandaVision” follow up. We find Agatha and her fellow witches traveling the dangerous, mysterious Witches’ Road.
‘Grotesquerie’ - FX
Niecy Nash-Betts executive produces and stars in the latest Ryan Murphy FX horror drama. We never know what to expect from Murphy, but it’s definitely weird and creepy. It’s also streaming on Hulu.
Her character and story are so fulfilling, Nash-Betts told The Root she’s never been more “satisfied as an actress.” Niecy is receiving well-deserved raves for her work in the thriller.
‘The Irrational’ Season 2 - NBC
Normally, case of the week series can get repetitive, but Jesse L. Martin’s endless charm keeps “The Irrational” fresh every week. We also love the authentic sibling dynamic between Martin’s Alec and Travina Springer’s Kylie. The “Law & Order” star told The Root that they’re chemistry happened immediately.
“The moment I met Travina, we got on like a house on fire,” he said. “Then we get on set and we’re handed these stories, we’re handed the words, and you couldn’t tell where Travina was going to go. Suddenly, I was on my toes no matter what.”
“The Irrational” airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on NBC.
‘Ghosts’ - CBS/Paramount+
If you like your spookiness with a side of absurdity, then “Ghosts” is the perfect Halloween series to get into. All the ghosts are hilarious, but obviously, Alberta is our favorite.
‘Shark Tank’ Season 16 - ABC/Hulu
It’s always fascinating to watch “Shark Tank” and wonder if you would buy a product, invest in a business, or have done a better presentation. Seriously, some of these inventors seem surprised they’re on the show.
‘The Equalizer’ Season 5 - CBS/Paramount+
We don’t know what’s in store for Season 5 of “The Equalizer,” but we assume it will involve Queen Latifah beating up bad guys while her hair looks flawless.
‘The Neighborhood’ Season 7 - CBS/Paramount+
We don’t know much about Season 7 of “The Neighborhood,” but there will probably feature Calvin and Tina trading barbs while trying to enjoy the new chapter in their lives.
‘Poppa’s House’ Season 1 - CBS/Paramount+
Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr. in a father-son comedy is destined to be hilarious. The real question is how many other Wayans will show up?
‘Simone Biles Rising’ Part 2 - Netflix
The next part of this docuseries follows the gymnastics GOAT as she heads to Paris and dominates the Olympics, winning even more gold medals...while injured.
Lioness - Paramount+
Zoë Saldaña once again recruits a young woman to infiltrate a dangerous terrorist organization, while also dealing with her own demons and sacrifices. It’s truly fascinating to see a female-led version of this familiar story.
‘The Day of the Jackal’ - Peacock
Lashana Lynch tracks down elusive assassin Eddie Redmayne in this new version of the classic spy thriller.
‘Cross’ Season 1 - Prime Video
Aldis Hodge takes on the role of Detective Alex Cross in Prime Video’s new adaptation of the popular book series. You can relax while watching this drama, because it’s already been renewed for Season 2.
‘Silo’ Season 2 - Apple TV+
What makes “Silo” such a fantastic binge is that it’s a sci-fi mystery and a cautionary tale. The way things are going, we could end up with an environment so toxic, we’re forced to live in cramped underground bunkers.
‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’ - Disney+
The “Star Wars” series has a classic coming-of-age vibe, which is a nice reminder of what originally drew us to the universe.
Dec. 20: ‘National Christmas Tree Lighting’ - CBS/Paramount+
Mickey Guyton is among the performers at the National Christmas Tree Lighting as President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden celebrate their final Christmas in the White House.
Dec. 22: ‘What If…?’ Season 3 - Disney+
In the third and final season of Marvel Studios’ animated series “What If…?” Jeffrey Wright’s The Watcher once again takes us on a fascinating trip through alternate Earths, including one where Storm wields Mjonir.
Dec. 25: ‘Doctor Who’ Christmas Special - Disney+
Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor finds himself caught up in the unexpected Christmas celebration of Nicola Coughlin’s Joy when her hotel stay crosses paths with the Time Hotel. This may all sound crazy, but it makes sense when you watch.
