While Denver Bronco fans were celebrating their Super Bowl 50 win, former NFL player Bill Romanowski was scolding Cam Newton on Twitter for what he thought was a bad post-loss attitude. But Romanowski’s scolding didn’t exactly sound like it was coming from a former player—more like from someone who longed for the days of Jim Crow.
If there’s one thing that’s filled with negative racial connotation, outside of the n-word, it’s calling a black man “boy.” And that’s exactly what Romanowski did on Twitter.
“You will never last in the NFL with that attitude. The world doesn’t revolve around you, boy!” Romanowski tweeted, then deleted.
This isn’t Romanowski’s first time being accused of being racist. He caught fire when he spit on San Francisco 49er receiver J.J. Stokes’ face in 1997; of course, he said he didn’t do it because Stokes was black. But there have been other rumors that he was racist during his career.

In 2000, Sports Illustrated covered his alleged racism, including the use of the n-word. But, of course, he denied those claims as well.

On Sunday night, after catching hell on Twitter, Romanowski apologized for the tweet.

There’s the saying that a leopard can’t change its spots. This obviously rings true for Romanowski. It seems as though sounding racist isn’t really a hard thing for him to do.
