On Sunday evening, the biggest and brightest stars descended upon the Peacock Theatre at L.A. Live in Los Angeles to celebrate the best television had to offer over the last year. As always, the evening was full of some shocking snubs and exciting surprises, and we’re breaking down all the moments you need to know about television’s biggest night.
Abbott Elementary Shut Out
The beloved ABC comedy went without any wins this time around. Quinta Brunson’s “Abbott Elementary” earned a whopping seven nominations for their third season, which wrapped earlier this year. These included performance nominations for Brunson herself, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Janelle James, and Tyler Joseph Williams, as well as creative categories. Unfortunately, the series walked away empty-handed this year, with shows like “The Bear” and “Hacks” dominating the comedy categories in 2024.
Lamorne Morris wins his first Emmy
Congratulations are in order for Lamorne Morris! The actor and comedian took home Best Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology series for his performance as Witt Farr in “Fargo,” the hit anthology series. Taking to the stage, he thanked God for “allowing him to be here,” his family, his cast, and his management team in an endearingly hilarious acceptance speech. Check it out below.
RuPaul’s Drag Race Loses to The Traitors
The Outstanding Reality-Competition Program Emmy went to the hit Peacock reality mashup series, “The Traitors.” While the show has become a sleeper hit for the streaming service, it had stiff competition, as “RuPaul’s Drag Race” has earned 29 Emmys since it premiered in 2009. On Sunday night, however, a new champion was crowned when “The Traitors” took home the award, signaling a new era in the reality competition category.
Liza Colon-Zayas Makes History With “The Bear” Win
One of the most exciting wins of the night was Liza Colon-Zayas’ win for her work in “The Bear.” The actress and playwright made history on Sunday evening, becoming the first Latina to win for best supporting actress in a comedy series, as The Hollywood Reporter pointed out. Check out her emotional speech, including a powerful moment where she urges all Latinas looking at her to “keep believing and vote.”
