With half of the year over, The Root decided to take a return to the best Fashion moments so far.
The BET Awards are known as “Culture’s biggest night.” The title is definitely earned on the red carpet, where the most prominent Black stars in entertainment and sports bring their best fashion. After an unconventional show in 2023, the event returns to full force in 2024 with Taraji P. Henson hosting, Usher receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award and Will Smith debuting new music. Of course, everyone showed up and showed out. Usher looked handsome in jeans and white blazer while Taraji showed up in a Balmain gown and Betsey Johnson pumps. Last night, the BET Awards was once again the annual spectacle that it always is. Host Taraji P. Henson gave us a fun take on Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” women rappers like Megan Thee Stallion, GloRilla, Latto and Ice Spice gave captivating performances, Shaboozey finally teamed up with J-Kwon for an ultimate “Tipsy” showdown and Killer Mike gave a spirited acceptance speech. With “The Color Purple,” “American Fiction,” “Swarm” and “Abbott Elementary among the nominees, we’re finally seeing our favorite Black films, TV series and artists get the recognition they deserve. One of Hollywood’s biggest nights—the Oscars—took place last night at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Jimmy Kimmel served as host for the fourth time, with Black Hollywood favorites Cord Jefferson and Da’Vine Joy Randolph taking home awards for their respective projects (“American Fiction” and “The Holdovers”).
